These cities serve as the intellectual and spiritual soul of Morocco, where medieval medinas and centuries-old traditions come to life.
Your itinerary then leads to the Atlantic coast to visit Rabat, the elegant capital, and the bustling metropolis of Casablanca, home to the majestic Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world. Finally, you will conclude your trip in legendary Marrakesh, where vibrant souks, historic palaces, and serene gardens offer the perfect finale to your Moroccan discovery. From ancient architecture to dramatic landscapes, this tour showcases the incredible diversity and depth of Morocco’s cultural heritage.
Welcome to Tangier, the gateway between Africa and Europe. Just across the water from southern Spain, the city invites you to explore its historic medina or enjoy a leisurely walk along the seaside promenade. You can also head directly to Chefchaouen, the famous Blue City nestled in the Rif Mountains.
Enjoy the scenic drive and pause for a two to three hour hike to the Cascades d’Akchour. Once in Chefchaouen, wander through its charming maze of narrow, blue-washed streets. Settle in Plaza Uta el-Hammam to enjoy a meal or coffee as you watch local life unfold. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the Grand Mosque, its exterior is still worth seeing.
Nearby, explore the historic kasbah with its gardens, museum, and former prison cells. For sweeping views, follow the trail outside the old city walls to Hotel Atlas and head to its rooftop. Adventurous travelers can continue eastward to the Ras el Ma Spring and climb up to the abandoned white Spanish Mosque (a 20 to 30 minute walk) for a stunning sunset panorama over the entire Blue City.
Wake early to photograph the quiet morning streets of the Blue City before departing for Fes. On the way, visit the UNESCO listed ruins of Volubilis, once the farthest reach of the Roman Empire in Africa. Explore ancient villas, preserved heating systems, majestic temples, and impressive mosaics that tell the story of Morocco’s ancient history.
Continue to Meknes, often considered a more relaxed counterpart to Fes, for your first look at one of Morocco’s legendary Imperial Cities. Key highlights include the Ville Impériale, the historic medina, the monumental Bab al-Mansour gate, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the Royal Stables.
Then head east to Fes, your second imperial city, world renowned for its vast and labyrinthine medina. Before navigating its narrow old streets, drive up to the Merenid Tombs for an expansive panoramic view of the city. Afterwards, settle into your traditional riad and enjoy a peaceful evening accompanied by a traditional Moroccan meal.
Fes, the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities, has preserved its medieval character thanks to minimal colonial influence. The city includes two historic medinas, Fes el Bali and Fes el Jdid, along with a French-built Ville Nouvelle from the early 20th century.
Meet your local guide to explore the winding lanes of Fes el Bali, founded in 789 CE. Observe architectural elements influenced by Spain and Tunisia as you browse vibrant markets selling authentic spices, leatherwork, and metal goods. Visit the renowned Chouara Tannery and view its iconic dyeing pits from a nearby rooftop for the best photography spots.
Admire the intricate tilework and craftsmanship of the 14th century Al Attarine Madrasa, then see Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 CE and considered one of the oldest continually operating universities in the world. End your tour in Fes el Jdid’s Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, for another breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
Depart Fes and journey north to Morocco’s capital, Rabat, another historic Imperial City. Explore the Chellah Necropolis with its unique blend of Roman and Islamic ruins. Enter Rabat’s old quarter through the impressive gate of the Kasbah des Oudaias, then relax in the peaceful Andalusian Gardens.
Visit the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohamed V, remnants of a 12th century mosque project that was never completed. Continue south to Casablanca and check into your hotel. Walk along the oceanfront Boulevard de la Corniche, often called Morocco’s version of Miami, and make your way to the Hassan II Mosque.
Although interior tours are only held in the morning, the exterior at sunset is breathtaking. End the day with dinner at Rick’s Café, a legendary bar and restaurant inspired by the classic film Casablanca.
Casablanca, Morocco’s business center, is home to the spectacular Hassan II Mosque, perched above the Atlantic. Its 210 meter (690 foot) minaret, the tallest in the world, dominates the shoreline. The mosque can host 80,000 worshippers in its courtyard and another 25,000 inside, and it is notably one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. Join a morning tour to admire the detailed craftsmanship, from carved stone and wood to marble floors and gilded cedar ceilings.
After arriving in Marrakesh, known as the Red City for its centuries-old red sandstone walls and buildings, you will discover a cultural and economic hub with a vibrant medina. Begin west of Jemaa el-Fna and walk toward the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, whose 77 meter (253 foot) minaret is the tallest in the city. Explore the nearby souks, including Souk el-Attarin (spices), Souk Haddadine (blacksmiths), and Souk Smata (traditional slippers). Visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa for a look at exquisite 16th century architecture.
As you stroll through the city’s alleys, look for the old fondouks, historic inns that once hosted traders and caravans. Some have been transformed into homes, while others now serve as workshops and boutiques. If time and energy allow, continue to landmarks south of Jemaa el-Fna such as the Saadian Tombs, the ruins and gardens of El Badi Palace, or the beautifully decorated Bahia Palace. For a more tranquil end to your trip, unwind at the serene Majorelle Gardens among palms, bamboo, and water lilies.
After a final Moroccan breakfast at your riad, your 6-day Imperial Cities tour comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Marrakech Menara Airport for your return journey. We hope you leave with unforgettable memories of Morocco’s history, culture, and hospitality.
