Explore Desert Towns as well as the surrounding area including the desert of Erg Chebbi, mountains, and Berber villages. Start in the city of Fes and travel south to Marrakech through the Sahara desert and the Atlas Mountains.
Ifrane and the Cedar Forest of the Middle Atlas Venture into the Sahara Desert starting early from Fes via Ifrane. Begin your day bright and early as you travel south toward this city, often called "Little Switzerland" for its clean air, red-roofed houses, and pristine streets. Set high in the Middle Atlas Mountains, it is beautifully surrounded by the largest cedar forest in the world, with picturesque green trees covering the mountain slopes.
The Barbary Apes of Azrou As you continue, the dense forest of Azrou reveals itself as home to families of Barbary apes. You can often see them playing in the trees or gathered by the side of the road.
Crossing the Atlas Passes Travel toward Midelt and climb over the Tizi Zad pass (2178 m – 7146 feet) through the cedar forest before stopping in Midelt for lunch. Your journey then continues over the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi N'Tlghmet pass (1900 m – 6233 feet). Enjoy the beautiful scenery of hidden oases and Ksours (fortified houses) as you enter the Ziz Valley, famous for its lush palm groves.
Erfoud and the Sahara Experience Travel further southeast to reach the town of Erfoud, world-renowned for its annual date festival and fossil mining. You have the option to visit a fossil factory to learn how ancient rocks are transformed into beautiful products like tables and fountains.
Sunset Camel Trek and Berber Camp Continue to the highlight of your tour: the Sahara Desert of Erg Chebbi, a vast sea of sand dunes covering 35 square kilometers (13 square miles). Here, you will switch gears and hop on a camel to cross the desert to your Berber tent camp. Along the way, stop in the middle of the dunes to witness a spectacular sunset. Finally, settle into your Berber tent and enjoy a delicious dinner on-site, followed by traditional Berber music under the starry sky.
Sunrise and Desert Exploration Try to wake up early to catch the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes before returning to the Berber camp for breakfast. Afterward, set out to explore more of the Sahara by 4x4 vehicle.
Khamlia Village and Gnaoua Music Head to the traditional Saharan village of Khamlia. Here, you can immerse yourself in the soul-stirring Gnaoua music and even join in the traditional dance. This village offers a unique cultural encounter with the descendants of enslaved people brought from sub-Saharan Africa.
Rissani: The Historic Trading Hub The journey continues to Rissani, which served as a major caravan trading point until about a century ago. Gold and silver trades were common in the Tafilalt region as late as the early 1900s. Nearby, you can still see the ruins of Sijilmassa, once one of the most important cities in Morocco and a key stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes.
The Local Market Experience Stop in Rissani to visit the vibrant local market. Residents from the surrounding areas gather here three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday) to buy and sell everything from dates and fruits to livestock and spices. Historically, the market has also served as a vital social hub where locals meet to share news of the region.
Afternoon Leisure For the remainder of the day, you have the option to rent Quad ATVs or buggies to test your driving skills on the sand dunes. Alternatively, you can choose to simply relax by the pool at your hotel and soak in the desert atmosphere.
Morning Light and the Palm Groves of Toudra Wake up early to catch the sunrise before enjoying breakfast at your hotel near the dunes. Our desert journey from Fes leads us back through Erfoud for a second time. On the way to the Toudra Valley, we drive through numerous desert towns and Kasbahs (fortified houses). These villages offer incredible views, situated just beside the extensive Toudra River, which is lined with 48 km of lush palm trees.
Exploring the Toudra Gorges Leave the main road to walk through the Toudra Gorges, located 15 km from the city of Tinghir. Its massive rock walls change color with the sunlight, creating a magical effect. You can walk through the canyon and relax by the cool, refreshing water.
Into the Dades Valley Shortly after exploring the Toudra Gorges, we return to the main road to travel toward the Dades Valley. Along the way, the landscape reveals traditional Berber villages and fertile farmland filled with almond and fig trees. You will settle into your hotel in the heart of the Dades Valley for the evening.
The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs and the Roses Travel along the famous Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the scenic Dades Valley. Your first stop is the Rose Valley, renowned for its annual Rose Festival. In Kela'a M'gouna, you can admire the manicured rose bushes and visit a local cooperative to learn how rose petals are expertly transformed into fragrant rose water and essential oils.
Ouarzazate: The Hollywood of Morocco Traveling westward, you will drive through the immense Oasis of Skoura to reach Ouarzazate, often called the "Hollywood of Morocco." Here, stop to admire the 17th-century Taourirt Kasbah, a historic structure built from a traditional mixture of mud and straw. You may also take an optional tour of Atlas Studios or visit the Musée du Cinéma to learn how this area became the backdrop for famous films and series like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and Prison Break.
Ait Benhaddou: A UNESCO World Heritage Site Continue to the iconic Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 17th century. Historically, it was a vital trading center for Berber tribes and caravans traveling from the Sahara to Marrakech. Wander through its narrow alleys and climb to the top to reach the ancient granary for a panoramic view of the village. You can even cross the river to see the gate featured in the famous series Game of Thrones.
Crossing the High Atlas via Tizi N'Tichka
Begin your ascent of the High Atlas Mountains, where you will witness a dramatic change in the landscape. Reach the Tizi N'Tichka pass ($2,260$ meters) and stop to admire the breathtaking scenery. As you descend, you can stop at an Argan oil cooperative to see how the fruit is processed into oil and skincare products. As the mountains fade behind you, the climate and views will shift once more.
