Detailed Itinerary

Day 01 Fes Over the Middle and High Atlas into the Desert: Ziz Valley, Erfoud, Merzouga, and the Sahara

Ifrane and the Cedar Forests of the Middle Atlas Start your day bright and early as you venture toward the Sahara Desert, leaving Fes for Ifrane. Known as the "Little Switzerland" of Morocco, Ifrane will charm you with its clean air, red-roofed houses, and pristine streets. Set high in the Middle Atlas Mountains, it is beautifully surrounded by the largest cedar forest in the world. Nearby, the dense forest of Azrou is home to families of Barbary apes, which you can often spot playing in the trees or along the roadside.

Crossing the Atlas Passes to Midelt Continue your journey by climbing over the Tizi Zad pass (2178 meters – 7146 feet). After driving through the picturesque cedar forests, you will stop in Midelt (the "Apple City") for lunch. Afterward, the drive continues over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N'Tlghmet pass (1900 meters – 6233 feet). Enjoy the beautiful scenery of hidden oases and Ksours (fortified houses) as you enter the Ziz Valley, renowned for its vast palm groves.

Erfoud: The Gateway to the Fossils Traveling further southeast, you will reach the town of Erfoud, famous for its annual date festival and fossil mining. You have the option to visit a fossil factory to learn how ancient rocks are transformed into beautiful decorative products such as tables and fountains.

The Magic of Erg Chebbi and the Sahara Continue to the highlight of your journey: the Sahara Desert of Erg Chebbi, a vast sea of sand dunes covering 35 square kilometers (13 square miles). Here, you will switch gears and hop on a camel to trek across the dunes to your Berber camp. Along the way, stop in the heart of the dunes to witness a spectacular sunset. After settling into your Berber tent, enjoy a delicious dinner on-site, followed by traditional Berber music around the campfire under a magnificent starry sky.

Day 02 The Sahara Desert - Khamlia Village - Rissani

Sunrise and Desert Exploration Try to wake up early to catch the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes before returning to the Berber camp for breakfast. Afterward, set out to explore more of the Sahara by 4x4 vehicle.

Khamlia Village and Gnaoua Music Head to the traditional Saharan village of Khamlia. Here, you can immerse yourself in the soul-stirring Gnaoua music and even join in the traditional dance. This village offers a unique cultural encounter with the descendants of enslaved people brought from sub-Saharan Africa.

Rissani: The Historic Trading Hub The journey continues to Rissani, which served as a major caravan trading point until about a century ago. Gold and silver trades were common in the Tafilalt region as late as the early 1900s. Nearby, you can still see the ruins of Sijilmassa, once one of the most important cities in Morocco and a key stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes.

The Local Market Experience Stop in Rissani to visit the vibrant local market. Residents from the surrounding areas gather here three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday) to buy and sell everything from dates and fruits to livestock and spices. Historically, the market has also served as a vital social hub where locals meet to share news of the region.

Afternoon Leisure For the remainder of the day, you have the option to rent Quad ATVs or buggies to test your driving skills on the sand dunes. Alternatively, you can choose to simply relax by the pool at your hotel and soak in the desert atmosphere.

Day 03 Dades Valley and Toudra Gorges via Desert Villages and Kasbahs

Morning Light and the Palm Groves of Toudra Wake up early to catch the sunrise before enjoying breakfast at your hotel near the dunes. Our desert journey from Fes leads us back through Erfoud for a second time. On the way to the Toudra Valley, we drive through numerous desert towns and Kasbahs (fortified houses). These villages offer incredible views, situated just beside the extensive Toudra River, which is lined with 48 km of lush palm trees.

Exploring the Toudra Gorges Leave the main road to walk through the Toudra Gorges, located 15 km from the city of Tinghir. Its massive rock walls change color with the sunlight, creating a magical effect. You can walk through the canyon and relax by the cool, refreshing water.

Into the Dades Valley Shortly after exploring the Toudra Gorges, we return to the main road to travel toward the Dades Valley. Along the way, the landscape reveals traditional Berber villages and fertile farmland filled with almond and fig trees. You will settle into your hotel in the heart of the Dades Valley for the evening.

Day 04 Ouarzazate via the Valley of the Roses and the Skoura Oasis

The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs and the Rose Harvest Travel along the famous Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the scenic Dades Valley. Your first major stop is the Rose Valley, renowned for its annual Rose Festival. In Kela'a M'gouna, you can gaze at the manicured rose bushes and visit a local cooperative. Here, you will learn how delicate rose petals are traditionally transformed into fragrant rose water and essential oils.

The Oasis of Skoura Continuing your westward journey, drive through the immense Oasis of Skoura. This lush green belt is home to ancient palm groves and historic architecture, leading you toward the gateway of the desert.

Ouarzazate: The Hollywood of Morocco Arrive in Ouarzazate, famously known as the "Hollywood of Morocco." Stop to admire the 17th-century Taourirt Kasbah, an impressive historic structure built from a traditional mixture of mud and straw.

Cinematic History Ouarzazate has served as the backdrop for legendary films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down. To dive deeper into the region's history and the movie-making process, you can take a tour of a famous movie studio or visit the Musée du Cinema. Spend the rest of the day exploring these iconic locations before settling in.

Half an hour later, the road leads to the Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 17th century. Historically, it was a vital trading center for Berber tribes and the caravans traveling from the Sahara Desert to Marrakech. Wander through the Kasbah’s narrow alleys and passageways before climbing to the top to reach the granary, where you can admire a panoramic view of the village and the surrounding area. You can even cross the river to explore the gate featured in the famous series Game of Thrones.
